The way that land is currently farmed in Asia—particularly in Southeast Asia—causes permanent damage to the environment as well as to the products grown thereof. Most farmers employ what is commonly referred to as, the “slash and burn” method, in which land is quickly cleared by destroying and burning trees and other vegetation for temporary agricultural use. This causes deforestation, which drives down the land’s biodiversity and permanently ruins the soil. By introducing sustainable, organic methods of farming; as well as providing business training on the subject; we at Oon Jai not only seek to prevent long-term damage to the land, but also to assist in equipping farmers with the methods/skills necessary to provide adequate food, healthier lives, and financial security for themselves and their families. |
